LYVA Labs Joins £1M Seed Round for University of Liverpool Spin-out Plasma Fresh

Written by LYVA Labs | Tue, Jul 8, 2025

LYVA Labs is proud to co-invest in Plasma Fresh, a pioneering University of Liverpool spin-out developing cutting-edge sterilisation technology, as part of a £1 million seed funding round alongside Northern Gritstone's pre-seed program NG Studios and Deepbridge Capital. The round also includes a highly competitive Innovate UK grant.

Plasma Fresh is revolutionising food safety with its cold plasma technology—an in-line, retrofittable system that eliminates pathogens from food and equipment without the use of water or chemicals. The technology not only enhances hygiene and safety, but also dramatically reduces energy use and downtime—offering food manufacturers a sustainable, next-generation alternative to conventional sterilisation methods.

LYVA Labs’ investment supports the company’s next phase of growth, including commercial pilot installations, team expansion, and further R&D to broaden the platform’s applications across other sectors.

“We see great potential in Plasma Fresh, a pioneering University of Liverpool spin-out combining world-class research with commercial ambition,” said Akshay Bhatnagar, Head of Investments at LYVA Labs. “Their sustainable sterilisation technology tackles critical challenges in food safety, and we’re thrilled to co-invest and support their journey from lab to market.”

Deepbridge Capital also participated through its SEIS fund, which targets early-stage, high-growth technologies with both commercial and societal impact.

“Plasma Fresh exemplifies the kind of transformative innovation we seek to support through the UK Innovation Seed Fund,” said Andy Round, Investment Director at Deepbridge Capital. “Their technology addresses a critical need in food safety and sustainability, and we’re proud to back a team that combines deep technical expertise with a clear commercial vision.”

Plasma Fresh’s CEO, Lucas Azzolini Cordoni, added:

“This investment round is a major milestone for the company, which will allow us to get closer to revolutionising the way food is disinfected today.”

The company is one of five standout early-stage spinouts from the University of Liverpool currently participating in Northern Gritstone’s NG Studios venture building programme, powered by Deeptech Labs. On 2nd July, Plasma Fresh showcased its innovation to investors at the NG Studios Demo Day, marking a pivotal step in its commercial journey.

Emma Nolan, Head of the Enterprise Team at the University of Liverpool, added:

“Plasma Fresh is one of the first University of Liverpool spinouts to benefit from our new partnership with Northern Gritstone. We are excited that Plasma Fresh has taken part in the NG Studios pre-seed program and expect that the founding team will benefit enormously from access to leading mentors, networks and investors”

LYVA Labs remains committed to supporting exceptional founders in the Liverpool City Region and enabling high-impact innovation across health, life sciences, and deep tech.
